Drink me

I've switched back to drinking cow's milk, rather than rice or soy milk for various reasons (interestingly, it's not a financial decision - I refuse to drink non-organic/hormone-free milk, which means the price is pretty much the same). Also, when I say "drinking" I mean "using on cereal and in cooking/baking things".

But! Acting completely on impulse I bought some Hershey's syrup today, and made myself a glass of chocolate milk.

...

Good god, there is no reason to ever grow up, if growing up means you stop drinking chocolate milk.

An important point about weight gain/loss

Inspired by a combination of things I've read recently:

You are not fat because of your genes. You are not fat because of your self-diagnosed (or medically diagnosed) thyroid condition. You are not fat because of the alleged toxins in your food. You are not fat because your deity of choice hates you. You are not fat because of your friends.

You are fat because you regularly consume more calories than you burn.

If you change this, by altering your dietary and exercise habits (ie, stop with the McDonalds and TV, and start with the fresh vegetables and running) so that you burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight.

Eat healthier food. Eat reasonable amounts of that food (look it up; you don't need a quarter pound of fatty, low-grade meat for lunch). Leave the TV off in the morning and go for a run before work (it's easy, you don't need a gym or an exercise plan, just some decent shoes and the slightest trace of willpower), or after work, or on your lunch break (because you're bringing a salad from home instead of running out to McDonalds). Continue doing so.

Congratulations! You're beginning to move from 'fat' to 'not fat'! Can we please move on as a society now?

Mmm

Dear Mr. Trader Joe,

As long as I have you I have no need to really ever cook for myself, and I love you so very very much.

Yours,

An adoring, grateful fan.

Some post-post-season Phillies love

Here is the best 6-minute documentary about the Phillie Phanatic's hot dog gun that I have ever seen.

Success!

I have now baked something entirely on my own, wholly without supervision, and completely without problem.

Granted, it was cookies from one of those refrigerated rolls of pre-made dough, so all I really needed to do was set the oven to the right temperature, gob the dough onto the pan, put it in the oven, and take it out ten minutes later.  But still: my first unsupervised baking adventure.

To balance the sense of culinary maturity, dinner is ramen and a pack of chips from the vending machine.

Deeply satisfying

Take a cold, lousy and rainy night in suburban New Jersey.

Mix with soup and sandwich from Panera.

Enjoy the much-improved night.

Oh, Aramark

On my way out of the cafeteria today, I spied something potentially tasty on the dessert table. At first glance I thought it might have been some sort of eclair or creme puff, a notion which had me very excited. Perhaps some leftover goodies from some formal to-do?

Closer inspection revealed traces of artificial red fruity stuff. And that it was, like, a dinner roll.

*sigh*

Skub!

On the one hand I want to write this off as the most asinine opinion piece I've ever read in any newspaper (and considering I have, on at least on occasion, paged through the (London) Sun, that's saying a lot.) (It had been discarded on a seat on the Tube, and I'd finished my book.)

On the other hand, I do admit a grudging respect for the NY Sun, rushing to the defense of that lifelong friend of American everywhere, the Oreo.

In other dessert news, in my quest for eye drops today, I discovered that holy crap Albertson's sells Pocky. I wasn't expecting that.

(Also: Skub.)

Oh hell.

Dick Cheney's the President now.

Hm. I wonder if he's still not part of the executive branch?

In an entirely unrelated note, avocados are really tasty, and I'm glad I treated myself to one the other day.

McControversy ahoy

The Oxford English Dictionary has added 'McJob' to its text, defining it as "an unstimulating, low-paid job with few prospects". It is, of course, a word derived from the ubiquitous fast-food chain and the fact that working there is, well, unstimulating, low-paid, and doesn't have many prospects for advancement.

McDonalds is now circulating a petition trying to get the OED to change the definition, saying it's outdated and insulting to wage-slaves service-industry professionals. A few points come to mind here:

1. That's not the way the OED works, you grease-addled doofs! From the OED's website:
As the OED is a historical dictionary, its entry structure is very different from that of a dictionary of current English, in which only present-day senses are covered, and in which the most common meanings or senses are described first. For each word in the OED, the various groupings of senses are dealt with in chronological order according to the quotation evidence, i.e. the senses with the earliest quotations appear first, and the senses which have developed more recently appear further down the entry. In a complex entry with many strands, the development over time can be seen in a structure with several 'branches'.
Yeah. So even if that definition of "McJob" is outdated...that's the bloody point! It's not a normal dictionary, it's the dictionary, and the intent is not just to define words but to illustrate what they meant x years ago!

2. It's insulting to current 'McJobbers'? Because they're...what, unaware that their job is shit? Look, unless they've grown up completely cut off from society and now are on their first day on the job, anyone working in a number of industries understands that their job, 99% of the time, is shit. Food service, retail, customer service, call centers...these aren't jobs that most people truly want. The pay is low, the work is often demeaning, and you need to deal with the sweaty masses. So, sure, a select few chose it as a career (eg, I'm certain that the waitstaff at Le Bec Fin in Philly are not high-school students looking to earn enough to buy a Wii), but come on. Must we lie in order to be obscenely polite?

3. In 67 years, McDonalds has become one of the largest corporations in the world, has probably the highest name-recognition of any brand ever, and essentially owns the fast-food market in absolutely any country where the idea of fast food exists. An entry in a dictionary is not going to harm that.

Back from a winter wonderland

Christmas was OK. Nothing stupendous, but it was nice to see family again. It would have been nice to have a bit more time, but thus is life. It was also great to get down to Maryland to see some relations on that side of the family, as I don't know when I last saw any of them (at least a year and a half ago, probably more). So, it was pleasant.

More personally, since returning to the US, I've decided to drink far less soda. I'm not going to even try to cut it out completely because I quite honestly like soda. But in England I was drinking almost soda and coffee exclusively, because juice costs more and doesn't last as long, and I'm not a big water drinker. So I've decided that I'm going to limit myself to an occasional treat, less than daily. Who knows how it'll hold up once I go back to school.

Also, I decided today as we were cruising out of suburban Maryland: America is just stupidly in love with our own flag, and I don't understand it at all.
